Chapter Twenty Four

An Opportunity

He never left? What the fuck did that mean? He never left? Was this a trick? A mind game? Whatever it was, I didn’t have a chance to text or call Harrison back. I plugged the address for my lunch with Leonard Rosen into my navigation system, only for it to show my path riddled with red lines and traffic jams. My heart lurched as I realized I might be late for one of the most important events in my professional career. And I might have just fucked it up because of too many obligations, too many distractions, and not enough time to prioritize things in my life.

When I reached the old-school Italian restaurant in Queens, I had soaked my white blouse in copious amounts of sweat, and my hair frizzed two sizes larger than its previous diameter, probably making me appear like negative a million bucks. I was anything but great and trying to hold it together. I inhaled one last time through my nostrils before falling out of my car and jogging into the restaurant. I bolted to the hostess’ podium, letting the young girl know who I was. She steered me to an empty table, alerting me that I was the first person to arrive and Mr. Rosen would be here shortly as if she had communicated with him and knew his itinerary. I didn’t ask any further questions and offered a polite nod to the girl before collapsing onto the cherry wood dining chair, downing a glass of iced water in record time.

I put down the cup just as a steady hand planted itself on my shoulder, jolting me from my seat. I whipped my head around, triggering a mild case of whiplash, revealing Leonard Rosen, a figure slight in height but broad in stature. Leonard stared at my surprised expression with kind, ice-blue eyes and lush gray hair sprinkled with remnants of black. He outstretched his free hand, leaving it inches from my face.

“You must be Madison,” Leonard said in a velvet, baritone voice, shaking my weak hand. “It’s a pleasure to finally meet you.”

“It’s an absolute pleasure to meet you, Mr. Rosen.” I stood, maybe not even two inches from my chair, a meager attempt to meet his stance, as he swung around the table to take his own seat opposite mine. Leonard signaled for me to sit, an effort to join him and to pump some comfort into this meeting.

“I’ve waited too long to meet you,” Leonard said, loosening his unbuttoned collar from his crisp sky-blue linen shirt.

“How long have you been waiting?”

“About thirty-six hours,” he said, sliding his folded white napkin into his lap. “I don’t have much patience.” He peered into my empty lap, not making any gesture too obvious. “I hope you don’t mind. I thought we could talk business and eat.”

I caught the hint and put my napkin on my lap to match his moves. “Oh, well, we did agree to lunch.”

“So tell me,” said Leonard, clasping his bare hands together on the table.
